DeSantis says ‘swampy politics’ interrupted special session
Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida expressed frustration after state lawmakers concluded a special session he had called to advance immigration policies, instead prioritizing only one immigration-related bill. DeSantis aimed to align Florida’s legislation with President Trump’s mass deportation efforts. He criticized the lawmakers for not supporting the management’s executive orders, suggesting that their actions were driven by “swampy politics.” Trump’s border envoy, Tom Homan, received praise for his work but noted the need for more resources. Additionally, DeSantis highlighted concerns that proposed legislation would undermine his powers as governor, notably by shifting immigration enforcement responsibilities to the state’s Department of Agriculture. Despite Florida being a key hub for illegal immigration, the state does not have sanctuary cities.
DeSantis laments ‘swampy politics’ intervening in special session
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) slammed Florida lawmakers for ending the special session he ordered and convening their own.
DeSantis called the Florida legislature to meet in a special session to begin supporting President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. Trump has begun mass deportations, which are supported by his border czar, Tom Homan. However, the legislature opted to take up one immigration-related bill instead of the governor’s other recommendations, to his disappointment, which he expressed on Fox News’s Hannity on Monday.
“All these legislators ran, bashing Biden for four years. So now, we have a chance. The president gets sworn into office. He’s doing what he said he’s going to do. He’s issuing these executive orders. We have a special session of the legislature to say Florida is going to be in this fight. We can be a force multiplier. Here’s the thing, Sean: Homan, these guys are doing great. They don’t have enough resources when you talk about all the people that have come in,” DeSantis said. “But there’s swampy politics everywhere.”
Trump thanked DeSantis’s efforts to call the special session and encouraged other governors to follow suit. DeSantis confirmed he is working with this administration. The governor said he knew about the immigration policies Trump was planning to pursue via executive orders in his first days in office before Trump signed them.
Republican state House Speaker Daniel Perez and Republican Senate President Ben Albritton were among the opponents to this special session. They wrote a memo before Friday expressing that they wanted a say in “when and what legislation we consider.”
According to DeSantis, their proposed bill “takes power away from me as governor and gives it to the commissioner of agriculture.”
“Agriculture is not exactly known for immigration enforcement. It’s ridiculous. It’s unconstitutional,” DeSantis said. “This actually takes the power away that I’m currently exercising now.”
Florida has no sanctuary cities but has been an epicenter for illegal immigration due to its location on the Atlantic coast. DeSantis has transported illegal immigrants to sanctuary cities, including Sacramento, California.
