DeSantis scores pivotal endorsement in key primary state New Hampshire

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has received another endorsement of his still unannounced 2024 presidential campaign.

Republican Rep. Jason Osborne, who is the majority leader of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, announced his endorsement of the Florida governor in an op-ed for the New Hampshire Journal.

According to the Granite State politician, DeSantis is a “strong, capable challenger for Joe Biden who can win and lead our country forward.”

While he didn’t extend his support to the current Republican primary front-runner, he did use a variation of former President Donald Trump’s popular campaign slogan, writing that with DeSantis as nominee, Republicans can continue “making America great again.”

In his op-ed, Osborne highlighted DeSantis’s ability to win, noting that “He took office by a narrow margin and then secured re-election by the largest margin in fifty years, also extending his coattails down the ballot resulting in a supermajority legislature. He even flipped dark blue Miami-Dade County.”

“This is a testament to his popularity and effectiveness as a leader,” he claimed. “DeSantis is a man who knows how to win, and he can help Republicans win in 2024.”

“Republicans can win back the White House, Congress, and state legislatures,” he wrote. Notably, several Trump endorsees lost key Senate and House races in the 2022 midterm elections. Polls also vastly overshot the Republican Party’s gain in the election.

As a result, House Republicans are subject to a razor-thin majority in the 118th Congress, making it more difficult to pass legislation.

Figures within the GOP soon began pointing the finger at the former president for the relatively poor 2022 results.

Florida, however, was an exception to the Republican losses in the rest of the country. With Republicans posting huge wins across the state, reports began to label the historic swing state as solidly red. DeSantis won reelection in a landslide, staving off his Democratic challenger Charlie Crist.

After the November midterm elections, support for a 2024 run from the Florida governor spiked. One-third of potential Republican primary voters said they would vote for DeSantis, a record high for the expected Republican candidate.

“It’s time for Governor DeSantis to get into this race and start earning Granite Staters’ support. I hope to see him on the trail soon,” Osborne concluded.

Trump, who announced his White House bid last year and has been actively campaigning ever since, boasts the support of 56% of potential Republican primary voters. Currently, DeSantis is supported by 22%, per Morning Consult.

DeSantis has also been endorsed by Reps. Chip Roy (R-TX), Thomas Massie (R-KY), and Laurel Lee (R-FL), as well as Michigan Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt and Alabama State Auditor Andrew Sorrell. However, Trump enjoys the support of 11 senators and more than 50 House members for his 2024 campaign, in addition to other endorsements.
