DeSantis rejects climate change blame for Idalia.
Gov. Ron DeSantis Dismisses Climate Change Blame for Hurricane Idalia
As Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) surveyed the aftermath of Hurricane Idalia in Yankeetown, Florida, he had a strong message for those attributing the devastation to climate change: It’s a “lie.”
During his tour on Sunday, DeSantis was questioned about President Joe Biden’s recent statements linking climate change to natural disasters like Idalia, which struck Florida as a Category 3 hurricane.
Historical Perspective
“Well, I think if you look, there was a storm that followed almost the exact path in 1896. It had 125-mile-an-hour winds, just like this one,” DeSantis stated, referring to another destructive hurricane that hit the Sunshine State. “If you examine Florida’s history, the most powerful hurricane we’ve ever experienced is the Labor Day hurricane of 1935, with sustained winds of 185 miles per hour.”
Championing a ”False” Ideology
Expanding on his viewpoint, DeSantis argued that those who blame climate change for natural disasters are promoting a misguided ideology.
“The notion that hurricanes are something new is simply false. We must refrain from politicizing the weather and natural disasters,” DeSantis emphasized. “Sometimes, people need to take a step back and gain some perspective. But the idea that adopting extreme left-wing policies at the federal level will prevent hurricanes is a lie.”
“It’s wrong to exploit the suffering of others by using different types of storms as a pretext to advance personal agendas,” DeSantis added. “And we won’t allow that in the state of Florida.”

DeSantis’ Commitment to Florida
The governor canceled several of his presidential campaign events to return home and assist Floridians in recovering from Idalia. While holding a press conference, a 100-year-old oak tree fell on the grounds of the governor’s mansion in Tallahassee, Florida. Fortunately, his wife Casey DeSantis and children were unharmed.
On Saturday, President Biden visited the state and assured Floridians that he was prepared to provide any necessary support. However, he did not accompany DeSantis during his tour of Live Oak, Florida.
