A super PAC dedicated to boosting Gov. Ron DeSantis’s (R-FL) presidential campaign has initiated staff layoffs just days after the Florida governor secured second place in the Iowa Republican caucuses.
The New York Times first reported the layoffs, which affected employees from the pro-DeSantis super PAC Never Back Down in Iowa and Nevada, the third state in the GOP presidential nominating calendar.
Following the conclusion of the Iowa Republican caucuses, Never Back Down had plans to transfer some of its staff to other early voting states, while offering remaining employees pay until the end of the month, according to a spokesperson from the super PAC who confirmed this to the Washington Examiner. The Washington Examiner’s inquiry regarding the number of affected staffers went unanswered by Never Back Down.
“Never Back Down continues to host a slew of events on the ground for Gov. DeSantis in South Carolina, New Hampshire, and beyond aligned with our core mission of mobilizing grassroots field operations in those states,”
said Never Back Down CEO Scott Wagner in a statement.
“We’ve mobilized several members of our robust Iowa team over to the other early primary states to help in these efforts and will continue working to help elect Gov. DeSantis, the most effective conservative leader in the race, our next President,”
Wagner added.
After former President Donald Trump’s dominant victory in the first GOP presidential contest in Iowa with 51% of the vote, DeSantis, who garnered 21%, is now shifting his campaign focus to South Carolina, the home state of former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley. DeSantis’s campaign confirmed to the Washington Examiner that he is also seeking to increase his presence in New Hampshire, where Trump currently leads.
With less than a week until the New Hampshire primary, DeSantis plans to make several stops across the state before concentrating on weakening Haley’s support in her own backyard.
