DeSantis takes aim at Florida social studies textbooks for critical race theory

TFlorida is currently reviewing the content of public school social studies curricula in order to eliminate concepts that are illegal under state law. This includes critical race theory.

After a thorough review of thousands of pages of social science textbooks, school districts removed many books containing pornographic or explicit content.

Florida officials have previously examined math books. “prohibited and divisive” Critical race theory was one of the most controversial concepts last year. 54 books were removed from state schools. Later, nine books were reinstated.

Just like last year with math books, the state is now reviewing social studies books in an effort to ensure they remain the same. “prohibited” Concepts are not included in the New York Times reported.

A conservative group called the Florida Citizens Alliance was involved in reviewing the books on social studies. According to some reports, it urged the Florida Department of Education, 28 of 38 books that the group had reviewed, to be rejected. The group also contributed to library book reviews.

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R.FL), widely expected to launch an election campaign later in the year, has been repeatedly featured in national headlines for his efforts against “woke” education, including critical race and gender theory.

DeSantis and state’s education department prevented the College Board from piloting a course in Advanced Placement African American Studies earlier this year. This was because the course outline contained a number of errors. “black queer studies” and encouraged support of slavery reparations. DeSantis was later charged with the College Board’s complicity in the final version that the College Board produced. The course had omitted many details that the Florida government had opposed.

DeSantis has pushed for a variety of education-related policies in the state’s 2023 legislative sessions. These include a bill that would ban diversity, equity and inclusion departments at universities. The legislature also considers a universal choice program and a bill that tightens restrictions on classroom instruction related gender identity or sexual orientation before highschool.
