DeSantis’s Trump strategy tested by pressure to take sides on rumored indictment
Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida is facing pressure to take a stance on former President Donald Trump’s recent comments, but he’s sticking to his own game plan. Trump, who recently hinted at an upcoming arrest, drew a flurry of requests on social media from his associates requesting DeSantis’s opinion. Despite the pressure, DeSantis still refuses to give an opinion in Trump’s favor, retreating instead towards his established playbook.
DeSantis, who is expected to announce his run for the White House this summer, has kept quiet on the matter and has refused to give any criticisms of Trump so far. DeSantis finally responded on Monday by attacking Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg over his handling of the situation, but he did not mention Trump directly. Despite being nudged by Trump aides on Twitter, DeSantis is sticking to his approach of not getting involved in the case and not taking sides.
DeSantis’s strategy of trying to appeal to Trump’s voters while convincing them to choose someone else puts him and other GOP candidates in a difficult position. DeSantis may be at risk of alienating himself from Trump’s massive Republican base if he makes a clean break from Trump, or allowing Trump to control the narrative if he sides with him wholeheartedly, presenting the strongest candidate in the field.
However, DeSantis’s unwavering commitment to sticking to his established plan may prove an asset in the long run, despite the pressure from Trump and his allies.
It remains to be seen how DeSantis’s stance on Trump will affect his chances of winning the support of the GOP base as well as the general electorate in the 2024 presidential election.
