Detroit pastor commends Trump for visiting inner-city areas and criticizes Obama for not doing the same
During a panel event at 180 Church in Detroit, Michigan, Pastor Lorenzo Sewell expressed his appreciation for Donald Trump’s visit, highlighting its significance compared to past presidential candidates. Trump’s attendance was part of his 2024 election campaign efforts, similar to his outreach strategies during the 2016 campaign. Pastor Sewell pointed out that while previous presidents like Obama and Biden had attended significant events like the NAACP dinner, they had not made similar community-specific visits to areas like the one he ministers in, which he referred to colloquially as “the hood.” The pastor’s remarks came against the backdrop of Detroit’s demographic, which is nearly 80% black, and where Democratic support has reportedly waned since the 2016 presidential election.
Pastor Lorenzo Sewell was grateful to host presidential candidate Donald Trump during a panel event on Saturday.
Trump was at 180 Church in Detroit, Michigan, where Sewell is the senior pastor, as he is campaigning for the 2024 election. Trump made similar trips around Detroit churches during his 2016 campaign.
“President Trump, I’m so humbled that you would be here. President Obama never came to the hood, so to speak,” Sewell said to applause. “President Joe Biden went to the big NAACP dinner, but he never came to the hood — so thank you.”
The population of Detroit is nearly 80% black. Democratic candidates have slipped in support from the area since 2016, when then presidential candidate Hillary Clinton received 47,000 fewer votes from Detroit voters than President Barack Obama did. Then, in 2020, Biden still did not recover the same number of votes that Obama once had, with only 6,000 more votes than Clinton.
Meanwhile, votes for Trump have increased marginally, as he originally received 3% of the vote in 2016 and over 5% the next election cycle.

As Trump sat down with the panel of church leaders, Biden and Obama attended a star-studded fundraiser event in Los Angeles, California.
A Wall Street Journal poll from April found that 30% of Black voters nationwide are planning to probably or definitely vote for Trump over Biden this fall. That high of an approval rating from black voters would be a massive swing from the 2020 election, in which Biden won 92% of the black vote. In 2020, black voters made up 13.5% of all eligible voters. According to the Pew Research Center, they are expected to make up 14% in 2024.
