Mayorkas, DHS Secretary, says it will take longer to see results in the worsening border crisis.
Homeland Security Secretary Defends Biden Administration’s Handling of Southern Border Crisis
During a recent press conference, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas defended the Biden administration’s handling of the ongoing crisis on the U.S. southern border. However, many reporters were not convinced by his answers.
Mayorkas Blames Broken Immigration System
Mayorkas, who has been leading the department for nearly the entire duration of Biden’s presidency, took no responsibility for the ongoing crisis and instead blamed a “broken immigration system.” When asked about the measures that the administration claims will address the surge at the border, Mayorkas sidestepped the question and claimed that the department had “surged resources of all types over months and months.”
Reporters Question Mayorkas’ Plan
Reporters pressed Mayorkas about a memo obtained by the U.S. Border Patrol chief that said illegal aliens would be released into the interior if overcrowding became an issue. Mayorkas claimed that it was “not an honor system,” but many reporters were not convinced. They pointed out that migrants don’t get an alien registration number or a court date and are instead asked to self-report to ICE within 60 days.
Mayorkas Admits It’s an Honor System
Mayorkas claimed that the vast majority of individuals will be placed in expedited removal and, if they do not qualify, will be removed in a matter of days or weeks from the United States. However, he effectively admitted that it was an honor system by saying that “if those individuals do not honor their commitment to surrender to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement Officer to be able to be placed in enforcement proceedings, they are a subject of our apprehension efforts.”
Conclusion
Overall, Mayorkas’ defense of the Biden administration’s handling of the southern border crisis left many reporters unsatisfied. It remains to be seen whether the administration’s alleged attempts to fix the crisis will yield tangible results in the near future.
