Did the BBC report that Ukrainian oligarchs donated to Trump’s campaign?

A post shared on social media purportedly shows a video from BBC News reporting that Ukrainian oligarchs have donated millions to former President Donald Trump’s campaign.

BBC News did not publish the video.

Fact Check:

Trump spoke at the final night of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee and said God was on his side during the assassination attempt, Fox News reported. Trump also featured the uniform of the firefighter who lost his life during the attempt onstage.

A post shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, alleges that BBC News reports that wealthy Ukrainians have donated to Trump’s campaign. The post shared the alleged video which features pensive music over images of money, Trump and text making the claim that Ukrainian businessmen have donated to his cause.

“Three of Ukraine’s richest oligarchs have jointly donated $8 million to Donald Trump’s election campaign,” the caption reads. “Trump’s new campaign sponsors are Igor Kolomoisky, his longtime business partner Gennady Bogolyubov and industrialist Konstantin Zhevago.”

The claim is inaccurate. The video is not from BBC News. There is no record of this report on the BBC website. Likewise there is no record of this report on any of BBC News social media accounts

Bellingcat, an “investigative collective of researchers, investigators and citizen journalists,” also found that the video is not from the BBC. Foreign donations to American political campaigns are illegal, according to Federal Election Commission. The FEC lists the categories that are prohibited from donating and foreign nationals appear on that list.
