Republicans and Democrats respond to Supreme Court student loan ruling from opposing perspectives.
The Supreme Court Strikes Down Biden’s Student Loan Forgiveness Plan
The Supreme Court’s recent decision to strike down President Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan has sparked a heated debate between conservatives and liberals. In a 6-3 ruling, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the majority opinion in the case Biden v. Nebraska, ruling against Biden’s plan to wipe away $400 billion in student debt.
Conservative Celebration and Liberal Disdain
Former Vice President and Republican presidential candidate Mike Pence praised the decision, calling Biden’s plan “an egregious violation of the Constitution.” Pence stated, “Joe Biden’s massive trillion-dollar student loan bailout subsidizes the education of elites on the backs of hardworking Americans.”
Republican presidential candidate Sen. Tim Scott released a video contrasting his approach to education and the job force with that of Biden. Scott emphasized the importance of vocational education and apprenticeships, stating, “We need more welders, carpenters, and electricians. These are the jobs that built America.”
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy also expressed his support for the decision, tweeting, “The 87% of Americans without student loans are no longer forced to pay for the 13% who do.”
Liberal Response and Hope for Loan Forgiveness
Despite the disappointment, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez assured those upset by the decision that loan forgiveness was still a possibility. She tweeted, “It is very important to note this SCOTUS ruling does NOT remove Biden’s ability to pursue student loan forgiveness.”
Sen. Elizabeth Warren echoed Ocasio-Cortez’s sentiment, emphasizing the need to fulfill Biden’s promise of help for millions of hardworking Americans. Warren tweeted, “They expect this administration to throw everything they’ve got into the fight until they make good on this commitment.”
The fight for student loan forgiveness is far from over, as the looming end of the moratorium on student loan payments approaches. Interest will begin to accrue again on September 1, and payments will be due starting in October.
It remains to be seen how the Biden administration will respond to the Supreme Court’s ruling and whether alternative avenues for loan forgiveness will be pursued.
