Director Matt Reeves Hints “The Batman” Universe Will Continue To Co-Exist as New DCU Is Forged by James Gunn
As James Gunn and Peter Safran make their plans for new DC film continuity, where Matt Reeves’ Elseworld Batman universe fits in has been a mild topic of debate. Many thought Robert Pattinson would be included in the mainstream dietetics. Gunn disproved this rumor, but Reeves seems to have an answer.
In a recent interview with Yahoo, The Batman’s writer-director indicated that the status quo everyone has gotten used to over the last two years – one where standalone multiverses reign – will remain. He mentioned two arcs. “So we’re gonna have a sit-down where we talk about everything that’s going on and what the arcs of these two things are.”
Adding he’s “excited to hear about what they’re doing,” Reeves said that a meeting would take place soon. “We’ve talked a few times… I’m supposed to get together with [James Gunn] and Peter [Safran] sometime this month. They’ve been working feverishly on what they’re doing, and I’ve been working hard with my partners on what we’re doing — all our shows and stuff.”

Reeves and his team are developing spinoffs for HBO Max surrounding Colin Farrell’s Oswald Cobblepot and Arkham Asylum. The latter project is set right after the conclusion of The Batman The Arkham series is still a mystery, but it is making more progress. As it developed, it soon superseded an announced Gotham Police series that’s reportedly no longer happening.
Reeves continues to work on the script. The Batman 2 which will keep up the growth of his pocket universe as well DC’s film multiverse. Todd Phillips, who will continue the story about Arthur Fleck (his Joker), in addition to Gunn and Safran’s plans, will be able to take advantage of all that Gunn and Safran have in stock. Joker: Folie a Deux.
This film is currently in production and is due for release next year. It is not the only standalone project Gunn claimed was actually taking place under his supervision. There won’t be a future for Henry Cavill’s Superman and, at least initially, Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam in that mix. They might open communication again with Johnson to bring back Black Adam but we’re not holding our breath.
