Disney requests lawsuit against DeSantis to commence at GOP Convention, citing potential election interference.
Disney is facing a wave of backlash online following news that it is attempting to schedule its lawsuit against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to coincide with the start of the Republican National Convention next summer. The company wants the legal proceedings to begin on July 15, 2024, the same day the convention kicks off in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Political strategist Giancarlo Sopo expressed his concerns, stating, “Sounds like election interference.”

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody has filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing that the federal court lacks jurisdiction over the governor and the state’s Department of Economic Opportunity, as both are protected under Florida’s legislative immunity. Moody also cited the U.S. Constitution’s 11th Amendment as shielding them from the lawsuit, according to Yahoo News.
If the lawsuit is not dismissed, the governor and his attorneys are pushing for proceedings to begin on August 4, 2025, a date well after the presidential contest is over, as reported by the Tallahassee Democrat.
Disney has been facing its own struggles in recent years and has been attempting to place blame on DeSantis. In May, the company announced the cancellation of a billion-dollar office complex, citing “changing business conditions.” This move led many in the media to accuse Disney of punishing the state of Florida.
Josh D’Amaro, Disney’s theme park and consumer products chairman, explained the decision in an email to employees, stating, “Given the considerable changes that have occurred since the announcement of this project, including new leadership and changing business conditions, we have decided not to move forward with construction of the campus. This was not an easy decision to make, but I believe it is the right one.”
DeSantis’ press secretary, Jeremy Redfern, criticized Disney, saying, “Disney announced the possibility of a Lake Nona campus nearly two years ago. Nothing ever came of the project, and the state was unsure whether it would come to fruition. Given the company’s financial straits, falling market cap, and declining stock price, it is unsurprising that they would restructure their business operations and cancel unsuccessful ventures.”
Disney has already laid off 4,000 employees in recent months and plans to lay off thousands more due to its financial struggles.
