Disney Goes Woke With Lyrics In New ‘Little Mermaid’ Songs
The upcoming live-action adaptation of the popular 1989 classic “The Little Mermaid” will feature new songs as well as modifications to previous favorites like “Kiss The Girl” and “Poor Unfortunate Souls.” Disney has confirmed that the lyrics of two songs have been changed, and composer Alan Menken said in a Vanity Fair interview that the revised version of “Kiss the Girl” ensures the audience knows Prince Eric would never “force himself on Ariel.” He also mentioned revising the lyrics in “Poor Unfortunate Souls” so that young girls would not feel discouraged from speaking their minds, despite the sea witch Ursula’s manipulative behavior prompting Ariel to give up her voice.
Menken collaborated with Lin-Manuel Miranda to create new songs for the live-action remake. Menken recounted how Miranda’s fanatical devotion to “The Little Mermaid” as a child fueled his imagination and motivated him to collaborate with the acclaimed composer later.
The movie is set to release on May 26, while The Daily Wire has announced plans for kids’ content.
