Disney making the right move pausing Tangled: Joe Concha

Joe Concha, a senior writer for the Washington Examiner, discusses disney’s decision to pause the production of the live-action remake of “Tangled” following meaningful box office struggles faced by “Snow White.” He describes “Snow White” as one of the “most catastrophic bombs” in modern movie history, noting that it only grossed $69 million domestically against a $270 million budget. Concha emphasizes the need for production companies like Disney to reconsider how they handle thier stars’ social media presence, suggesting that controversial statements from actress Rachel Zegler may have alienated potential audiences. He believes halting “Tangled” is a wise choice, signaling a need for Disney to reassess its content strategy, especially as the company seems reliant on sequels, prequels, and remakes. Concha questions what new content Disney can produce beyond its established themes.

Disney making the right move pausing Tangled after Snow White bombs: Joe Concha

Washington Examiner senior writer Joe Concha said Disney made the “right move” in pausing production for the live-action remake of Tangled following the box office bombing of Snow White.

“Disney, look, they had the most catastrophic bomb we have seen in modern movie history with Snow White,” Concha told Fox & Friends First.

“Disney and other production companies need to put in their contracts, and enforce it, that when you have a film that cost [$270 million] to make like Snow White, you cannot have its star in Rachel Zegler on social media talking about how horrible Donald Trump is, going off on Israel, especially with the fact that her co-star, Gal Gadot, served in the Israeli military.”

Disney hit the pause button on Tangled after Snow White, a film tormented by criticism related to casting, creative choices, and posts by Zegler, grossed $69 million domestically and $145 million internationally on a $270 million production budget, according to a report.

The new Snow White is “far from woke,” Washington Examiner contributors editor Madeline Fry Schultz wrote. “It is deeply inoffensive, leaving one to wonder whether the film would’ve flopped even without the controversy.”

When a film stars an actress who alienates over half the country, a stop has to be made, and pausing production on Tangled is the correct decision, Concha said.

WHO ASKED FOR THIS SNOW WHITE REMAKE?

“The fact that they’re not going to do this now because they realize that they can’t control maybe their stars or they can’t put out a product that celebrates the original product, well, yeah, Disney is making the right move here,” Concha said.

“You’ve got to wonder what are they going to do in terms of content because all they seem to do is do, you know, sequels or prequels or remakes, and, when they don’t have that, I don’t know what Disney has at this point outside of the theme park.”
