The tragic death of Jordan Neely has been sensationalized by the media and politicians, who have turned him into a martyr without acknowledging the truth about his character. But the reality is that Neely was not a harmless Michael Jackson impersonator, but a violent man with a long criminal history.
On May 1, Neely entered a train car and threatened strangers, claiming he was ready to spend the rest of his life in prison. A group of people made the decision to restrain him, resulting in his death from a chokehold. One of those people, Marine veteran Daniel Penny, now faces up to 15 years in prison after being charged with second-degree manslaughter.
While most media outlets have focused on Penny’s fatal chokehold, they have failed to report on Neely’s extensive criminal history. As an adult, he had been arrested 42 times, including for attempting to kidnap a seven-year-old girl. He also punched a 64-year-old man in 2019 and fractured the eye socket of a 67-year-old woman in 2021.
It’s clear that several parties are responsible for Neely’s death, including Neely himself for threatening people on a New York City train. However, progressive policies that push for bail reform and light sentences for violent criminals are also to blame. These policies allowed someone like Jordan Neely to walk freely, when he should have been in prison or confined to a psychiatric facility.
Should the Marine be exonerated?
- Neely was not a harmless Michael Jackson impersonator, but a violent man with a long criminal history.
- Politicians like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ayanna Pressley have ignored the truth about Neely’s character and turned him into a symbol of racial oppression.
- Progressive policies that push for bail reform and light sentences for violent criminals are also to blame for Neely’s death.
- The upcoming trial of Daniel Penny is a reflection of the failure of Democratic Party leadership to address the real issues facing their constituents.
It’s time for real change in New York City. We need leaders who will prioritize the safety of their citizens over political agendas. The tragic death of Jordan Neely should serve as a wake-up call to all of us.
