DNC Parts Ways With Marc Elias, the Clinton Campaign Lawyer Behind Steele Dossier
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has ended its longstanding relationship with election strategist Marc Elias, who was responsible for commissioning the controversial dossier that erroneously accused the Donald Trump presidential campaign of colluding with Russia.
According to anonymous sources familiar with the issue, the separation occurred because of “a number of strategic disagreements.” The withdrawal seems to apply only to the DNC, as Elias continues to represent numerous state and national Democratic campaign entities, including the DSCC, DAGA, and DLCC.
“The DNC works with a number of law firms on voting rights litigation, compliance, contracting and more. The DNC is appreciative of Elias Law Group’s years of work in service of the values we share,” a DNC spokesperson said in a statement.
A spokesperson for the Elias Law Group praised the New York City attorney’s past work with the DNC while saying that he would continue to advise Democratic clients.
“Elias Law Group is proud of the work it has done for the DNC. We look forward to continuing to represent the Democratic Party as well as helping citizens vote, and progressives make change,” the statement read.
Elias is best known for his role in the Steele dossier scandal. As general counsel for the Hilary Clinton presidential campaign in 2016, he retained opposition research firm Fusion GPS to produce a dossier accusing Republican candidate and now former President Donald Trump of colluding with Russian government agents. Fusion GPS assigned the task to retired MI6 agent Christopher Steele, who eventually delivered the dossier to the FBI in 2017.
