Why DNC push to nominate Biden before Chicago ignores president’s own words

The Democratic National Committee’s rush to nominate President Joe Biden virtually is under attack from Democratic doubters who want to see someone else atop the party’s ticket.

While Ohio formerly wouldn’t allow Biden on the state’s ballot unless he was nominated before the state’s early August deadline, prompting the virtual nomination on Aug. 7, legislation has since been signed by Gov. Mike DeWine (R-OH) ensuring the president is on the ballot in November — making the virtual nominating process solely to declare Biden as the Democratic nominee earlier.

Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) says this goes against Biden’s own statement that anyone challenging his nomination can do it at the Democratic National Convention on Aug. 19.

“Those so eager to overly protect President Biden ignore his own words inviting anyone questioning his nomination to do so at the convention,” he told Axios. Doggett was one of the first Democrats to call for Biden to step down.

Biden had a torrent of detractors before a shooter tried to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a rally, which shifted the national conversation to Trump and allowed Biden to dodge calls for him to step down more easily. However, if Doggett’s statement is indicative, it now seems that the Democrats may start picking away at the president again.

Those looking to do so won’t have long. The virtual nominating process is likely to open on July 29 and close on Aug. 5, according to the news outlet. Biden, with a lack of organization behind the movement to oust him, will likely be nominated in the virtual call.

Some delegates expressed concern to the outlet over this.

“Behind the scenes, people at the Biden campaign and DNC are working to put in the fix,” Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi, a Biden delegate from Maryland, wrote to her fellow state delegates last week, according to an email.

“Put simply, they are trying to shut down the process earlier. We can’t allow it,” she wrote. “I am asking you to ask the DNC to stop pushing for an early vote.”

Those who are against Biden will now only have under two weeks to organize against him as opposed to the over-a-month time frame until the Democratic National Convention.

But despite the increasingly likely narrative that Biden will be the Democratic nominee, he remains frustrated with the media as they have pursued him relentlessly over calls to step down. He told NBC’s Lester Holt to “sometime come and talk to me about what we should be talking about, OK? The issues.”
