Los Angeles Dodgers Pitcher Julio Urías Arrested Near BMO Stadium
LOS ANGELES—In a shocking turn of events, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urías was arrested near BMO Stadium, where Lionel Messi was playing in a Major League Soccer game with numerous celebrities in attendance.
Exposition Park public safety reported that Mr. Urías was apprehended by officers at about 11 p.m. on Sunday inside the park, which serves as the home to the stadium. The department has not yet disclosed the specific charges against Mr. Urías, but promised to release more details on Monday.
After posting $50,000 bail, Mr. Urías was released shortly before 5 a.m. on Monday, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department booking records. He is scheduled to appear in court on September 27.
Major League Baseball has expressed its intention to launch an investigation into the matter.
This is not the first time the 27-year-old Mexican-born pitcher has faced legal trouble. In May 2019, Mr. Urías was arrested for domestic battery. While he was suspended for 20 games by MLB, he managed to avoid prosecution by the Los Angeles city attorney by completing a 52-week domestic violence counseling program.
As the NL West-leading Dodgers embark on a six-game road trip to Miami, they have made it clear that Mr. Urías will not be traveling with the team. In a statement, the Dodgers said, “We are aware of an incident involving Julio Urías. While we attempt to learn all the facts, he will not be traveling with the team.” The club has declined to provide further comment at this time.
Mr. Urías, who is set to become a free agent after the World Series, has been a key player for the Dodgers. This season, he has recorded an 11–8 record with a 4.60 ERA in 21 starts. Currently in his final season of salary arbitration eligibility, Mr. Urías is pitching on a $14.25 million, one-year contract.
Notably, Mr. Urías played a pivotal role in helping the Dodgers secure the World Series title during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. He delivered exceptional performances, going 4-0 with a remarkable 1.17 ERA in 23 postseason innings. His standout moment came when he earned the save in the clinching Game 6 against Tampa Bay.
The left-hander continued to impress in 2021, leading the majors in wins with a 20–3 record and a 2.96 ERA. He finished third in the NL Cy Young Award voting last year after posting a stellar 17–7 record with an NL-best 2.16 ERA.
