“The accession age of 42 allows an Airman or Guardian to serve a full 20 years, since the retirement age is 62,” Brown explained.
According to Air Force officials, this adjustment is expected to result in approximately 50 additional recruits each year and provide an opportunity for those who were previously forced to retire to return to service.
“Recruiters will be contacting them and others who may have left processing due to age,” Brown stated.
This change comes after the Air Force fell short of its active-duty recruitment targets for the first time in over two decades. The Army, Air Force, and Navy all struggled to meet their recruitment goals for fiscal 2023.
The Air Force’s decision to raise the maximum enlistment age has been adopted by other military branches, such as the Navy, which increased its age limit from 39 to 41 in November 2022.
Recruitment challenges faced by the U.S. military are attributed to a decline in enthusiasm and suitability for service among the key age group for enlistment.
