DOJ Accuses Louisville Police Of Civil Rights Violations, Discrimination After Breonna Taylor Investigation

On Wednesday, the DOJ released its findings in an investigation at a press conference. The report was 90 pages long. Federal investigators said The review showed that the officers at Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD), had been found guilty. “engage in a pattern or practice of conduct that violates the U.S. Constitution and federal law.”

Some of the findings of this report include excessive force and execution search warrants with no knocking or announcement, invalid search warrants and violation of protester rights.

The LMPD “[u]nlawfully discriminates against Black (sic) people in its enforcement activities” And “discriminates against people with behavioral health disabilities when responding to them in crisis,” The DOJ stated.

“The Justice Department has concluded that there is reasonable cause to believe that Louisville Metro and LMPD engage in a pattern or practice of conduct that violates the constitutional rights of the residents of Louisville — including by using excessive force, unlawfully discriminating against Black (sic) people, conducting searches based on invalid warrants, and violating the rights of those engaged in protected speech critical of policing,” Merrick B. Garland, Attorney General of the United States, made these remarks in a statement.

Garland stated that the DOJ would “work closely with Louisville Metro and LMPD to negotiate toward a consent decree and durable reforms that protect both the safety and civil rights of Louisville’s residents.”

The DOJ announced On Wednesday, the Memphis Police Department announced that it will begin an identical review of its practices and procedures. The focus would be on the special units. This review came about after some officers were captured on video beating Tyre Nichols.

After police killed Breonna Taylor, 26, during a raid by no-knock officers, the Department of Justice began examining LMPD. Taylor’s boyfriend shot at police officers during the raid. He later claimed that he thought intruders were breaking into Taylor’s home. Taylor was wounded multiple times by the police after he fired back.

DOJ pursued The raid resulted in four charges being brought against the officers who were involved. These include obstruction, civil rights violations and unjustified use of force.

The grand jury indicted One of the officers was charged with wanton endangerment as well as disregarding the safety Taylor’s neighbours in September 2020. The officer was eventually acquitted last year.
