DOJ approves Hunter Biden prosecutor’s testimony soon.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) to Allow Special Counsel David Weiss to Testify on Hunter Biden Investigation
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has announced that special counsel David Weiss will soon testify before Congress regarding his investigation into Hunter Biden, the son of the president.
Assistant Attorney General Carlos Uriarte sent a letter on Friday to the House Judiciary Committee, reaffirming the DOJ’s commitment to make Weiss available for testimony in the near term. The letter also offered the availability of U.S. attorneys from California and Washington, D.C. for testimony.
Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) had requested Weiss, a U.S. attorney from Delaware, to participate in a transcribed interview on October 11. This request was part of several demands made by Jordan in his letter, seeking information on Weiss’s authority to bring charges. The DOJ had previously expressed willingness to let Weiss testify in July, but a plea deal in the case fell through.
“The volume and requested pace of the Committee’s proposed schedule far exceeds the Department’s resources, especially in light of the Committee’s other pending requests and subpoenas to the Department on other topics,” Uriarte stated in the new letter.
“We remain committed to providing information voluntarily, without unnecessary escalation,” Uriarte added. “However, any additional testimony and documents shared at this early juncture must continue to be appropriately limited to protect the ongoing matter and important confidentiality interests.”
According to CNBC, the exact date of Weiss’s testimony remains unclear, although Jordan mentioned that Weiss had agreed to appear before his committee on October 18 during an interview with Fox News. “We look forward to that,” he stated.
The Daily Wire reached out to the special counsel’s office for comment.
After a plea deal faced scrutiny from a judge, Attorney General Merrick Garland granted Weiss special counsel status in August, expanding the U.S. attorney’s authority to bring charges beyond his own district.
Hunter Biden was charged with federal gun charges earlier this month, and his lawyer stated that he plans to plead not guilty. Additionally, he may soon face an indictment on tax evasion charges.
During his testimony before the House Judiciary Committee last week, Garland emphasized that Weiss always had the discretion to bring any charges he deemed appropriate. However, the attorney general acknowledged that other U.S. attorneys could decline to collaborate with Weiss, as alleged in whistleblower testimony concerning D.C. and California.
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden is currently facing an impeachment inquiry based on corruption allegations. The House Oversight Committee has scheduled its first impeachment hearing for Thursday.
