U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland and the Department of Justice has faced scrutiny for siding with President Trump on a defamation suit. The DOJ announced it would continue to represent Trump in the suit filed by an alleged rape victim for comments he made about her while in office.
Critics are concerned on the DOJ’s stance and argued the agency should represent the people of the U.S. over a president they claim to be unfavorable. However, Garland assured he represents American’s first.
“The essence of the rule of law is what I said when I accepted the nomination for Attorney General,” he expressed. It is that like cases be treated like, that there not be one rule for Democrats and another for Republicans, that there not be one rule for friends and another for foes.”
.@TheJusticeDept should not spend taxpayer dollars to defend former President Trump from a defamation case brought by E. Jean Carroll. Their decision to do so is profoundly misguided. pic.twitter.com/CkgrdvktGg

Garland made the comments before a Senate Appropriations Subcommittee hearing on Wednesday. He went on to assert that he “backs the American people.”
