DOJ denies House GOP’s request for Mar-a-Lago FBI raid details.
The Department of Justice Rejects House Republican Request for Information on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Raid
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has denied a request from House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) to disclose information related to the FBI’s search and raid of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago last August. The raid was conducted in search of alleged classified documents.
Jordan had sent a letter to the DOJ, seeking details about the classified materials discovered during the search, including communications between the FBI’s Washington office and the U.S. Secret Service.
However, the DOJ rejected Jordan’s request, stating that it cannot provide non-public information about an ongoing criminal investigation and prosecution by a Special Counsel. Assistant Attorney General Carlos Uriarte emphasized the importance of protecting the confidentiality of such information to maintain the public’s confidence in the impartial administration of justice.
House GOP Chairman Seeks Information on Trump Case
In his letter, Jordan also asked Attorney General Merrick Garland to provide information about the individuals involved in the Trump case. This request was made before Trump was indicted on charges related to special counsel Jack Smith’s probe into the mishandling of classified documents by the former president.
Jordan’s letter to Garland stated that the Judiciary Committee had previously requested information and documents regarding the FBI’s raid on President Trump’s residence and the subsequent investigation. As Garland had not provided this information and appointed Jack Smith as special counsel, Jordan requested an unredacted copy of the memorandum outlining the scope of Smith’s probes and any supporting documentation related to his appointment.
The DOJ was given until June 20 to hand over the requested material.
DOJ Cites Special Counsel Regulations
In response, Assistant Attorney General Uriarte explained that special counsel matters are subject to mar-a-lago-fbi-raid/” title=”DOJ denies House GOP’s request for Mar-a-Lago FBI raid details.”>specific regulations governing appointment and independence. These regulations also establish procedures for disclosing certain information to Congress at the beginning and end of a special counsel investigation.
Uriarte pointed out that the recent indictment against Trump provides detailed information about the investigation and the charges brought against him. Trump pleaded not guilty to dozens of counts related to the classified documents in a Miami federal courthouse last week.
