DOJ assures Weiss will testify openly to refute ‘any misinterpretations of our efforts’.
The Department of Justice to Hold Public Hearing with U.S. Attorney David Weiss to Address Concerns
The Department of Justice has responded to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan’s request for a public hearing with U.S. Attorney David Weiss, who has been leading the federal investigation into Hunter Biden. The purpose of the hearing is to address any misrepresentations about Weiss’s work and provide clarity on the investigation.
In a letter to Jordan, Assistant Attorney General Carlos Uriarte stated that Weiss is willing to appear before the committee in late September or October. This timing allows for the completion of Hunter Biden’s plea agreement, which is scheduled for a hearing this Wednesday.
Concerns Surrounding Hunter Biden’s Plea Agreement
Hunter Biden is expected to plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges and enter a pretrial diversion agreement for a felony gun charge. Many Republicans, including Jordan, have criticized this agreement, referring to it as a “sweetheart deal.”
Jordan has been urging Weiss and other DOJ officials to meet with the committee to discuss concerns about potential special treatment given to Hunter Biden during the investigation. In a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, Jordan expressed his intention to subpoena the lower-level officials if Garland does not cooperate in scheduling interviews.
Investigating Allegations Involving Joe Biden
Jordan, along with Reps. James Comer and Jason Smith, has been investigating allegations that Joe Biden was involved in his son’s business dealings and may have participated in a bribery scheme while he was vice president.
In May, Smith met with two IRS criminal investigators who claimed that Weiss was prevented from bringing more severe charges against Hunter Biden in two jurisdictions. They also revealed that Weiss had sought special counsel status in the investigation but was denied.
Weiss’s Rebuttal and Concerns about Political Considerations
Weiss has responded to these allegations in various communications to Congress, but Jordan argues that his statements have been inconsistent and raise concerns about political considerations influencing the investigation.
In his letter to Garland, Jordan wrote, “Weiss’s shifting statements about his authority to bring charges against Hunter Biden, especially outside of Delaware, suggest that improper political considerations factored into the Department’s investigative and prosecutorial function.”
DOJ’s Commitment to Transparency and Justice
In response, Uriarte emphasized the Department’s dedication to the evenhanded administration of justice and expressed concern about any misrepresentations that could harm public confidence. He stated that it is in the public interest for the American people and Congress to hear directly from Weiss regarding questions about his authority.
Uriarte also addressed the subpoena threat, stating that it was premature and unjustified. He assured Jordan that the Department would continue to engage in discussions to understand the Committee’s interests.
Overall, the Department of Justice is taking steps to address concerns and ensure transparency in the investigation into Hunter Biden.
