Country music legend Dolly Parton reveals why she turned down the Super Bowl
Dolly Parton, the iconic figure in country music, has disclosed that she has been offered the opportunity to perform at the Super Bowl multiple times, but has always declined the offer.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 77-year-old Tennessee native explained her reasons for rejecting the prestigious event.
“I couldn’t do it because of other things, or I just didn’t think I was big enough to do it — to do that big of a production,” Parton confessed.
“When you think about those shows, those are big, big productions. I’ve never done anything with that big of a production,” she added. “I don’t know if I could have. I think, at the time, that’s what I was thinking.”
However, with the upcoming release of her first rock and roll album, “Rockstar,” on November 17, Parton expressed her willingness to consider a larger-scale performance.
“I might be able to do a production show,” she stated, referring to promoting her new music.
Parton also revealed that she initially declined an invitation to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, feeling that other deserving artists had been overlooked.
“They’re going to put me in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and somebody like Meat Loaf or some of these other great artists never even made it? I didn’t want to take away from somebody that has spent their life in that world like I had spent mine in country [music],” she explained.
Eventually, after learning more about the influence of her music and the diverse range of artists in the Hall of Fame, Parton accepted the honor.
“But I still didn’t feel great about it. I still thought I needed to earn it,” she admitted. “That’s why I thought, ‘Well, timing is perfect. There’s a real reason for me to do this rock ’n’ roll album. Here I am a rock star at 77.’”
Parton’s “Rockstar” album will feature 30 rock classics and original songs, with collaborations from renowned artists such as Paul McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Nicks, Sting, Joan Jett, Kid Rock, Emmylou Harris, Ringo Starr, Steven Tyler, Melissa Etheridge, and more.
