Don Mattingly Will Leave Marlins After 2022 Season
Don Mattingly’s time with the Marlins is coming to an end.
The manager informed the club Sunday that he’s resigning at the end of the 2022 MLB season. The decision is considered mutual, The Post’s Jon Heyman reports. The Marlins are 63-90, their fourth 90-loss season in the last five years.
“I think always, you try to follow your heart, and that’s what I did,” Mattingly told reporters after Sunday’s 6-1 loss to the Nationals. “Honestly, you know what’s inside of you and you try to be deliberate and let things work through, and then just follow your heart.”
Mattingly later added that he thinks “it’s time for a new voice.”
While Mattingly, the longest-tenured manager in Marlins history, is expected to take a break, the 61-year-old former Yankees great is not retiring, Heyman reports.
Mattingly took over as Marlins manager in 2016 after five years as the Dodgers’ manager. He has a 437-584 record in seven seasons in Miami, which has had a losing season in the six 162-game seasons during Mattingly’s tenure.
The Marlins were a surprise playoff team during the COVID-shortened 2020 season, going 31-29 to finish second in the NL East and make the playoffs, earning Mattingly NL Manager of the Year honors. That snapped a streak of 16 seasons without a playoff berth. They beat the Cubs, 2-0, in the wild-card round before getting swept by the Braves in the NLDS.
“I thought we were turning the corner in ’20. We maybe overachieved just a touch in ’20, but I thought we were starting to gain that confidence and that unity as the organization was moving forward that we were gonna be able to turn the corner,” Mattingly said. “Last year was disappointing, and then this year’s been kind of more of the same.”
Mattingly was manager when the team underwent an ownership change, with Bruce Sherman taking over in 2017 as part of a group with Derek Jeter, who became the team’s CEO. Jeter left as CEO this past February after a disagreement over the team’s direction and sold his minority stake in the team.
“We are fortunate to have had Don Mattingly leading our team on the field over the last seven years,” Sherman said in a statement. “He has represented the Marlins, our players, our fans, and the South Florida community with unmatched dignity and pride. Over the course of our recent conversations with Don, we both agreed not to pursue a new contract for the 2023 season and that the time is right for a new voice to lead our clubhouse.”
