Don Trump Jr. visits Greenland after father’s flirtation with buying territory

Donald Trump Jr. made a surprise visit to Greenland on Tuesday following his father’s statements reiterating he would like to buy the island territory.

He made the trip as a private citizen and was not representing the incoming administration in an official capacity, though his father, President-elect Donald Trump, made multiple statements approving of the visit.

“I am hearing that the people of Greenland are ‘MAGA.’ My son, Don Jr., and various representatives will be traveling there to visit some of the most magnificent areas and sights,” the president-elect said on Monday night.

“Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our nation,” Trump wrote. “We will protect it, and cherish it, from a very vicious outside world. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!”

Trump Jr. posted several photos and videos from his trip, including a moment in which his father spoke to a small gathering of pro-Trump Greenlandic citizens over the phone.

“I just want to say it’s a very special place. It needs security for itself, but it also needs security very much for the world. You see the people and the ships sailing around, and they’re not the right ships, and they’re not the ships you wanna know about,” the president-elect told the group. “So we need security. Our country needs it, and the whole world needs it — you’re so strategically located.”

“We’re gonna treat you well,” he added. “You know that.”

Erik Jensen, chairman of the Siumut party in Greenland’s parliament, said there were no plans to meet with Trump Jr. during his visit.

“I can confirm that I have not planned to meet with him,” Jensen told the Greenlandic newspaper Sermitsiaq. “I say it again that Greenland is not for sale and never will be.”

The party chairman was not hostile to the visit, however, welcoming the interest shown in his country.

“Everyone is welcome to visit our country, including Trump. When the future president’s son, who is also his own adviser, shows interest in our country, it means that Greenland is serious,” Jensen continued.

Donald Trump has made purchasing Greenland a prominent goal of his incoming administration.

“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Trump said via Truth Social last month.

Greenlandic Prime Minister Múte Egede has consistently rebuked any notions that the U.S. can buy the island, replying to Trump: “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom.”
