Former President Donald Trump’s team anticipates a two-month trial in Florida following his arrest.

Former⁤ President ⁢Donald Trump’s Legal⁢ Team ‌Prepares for Lengthy Trial in ‍Classified Documents Case

Former President Donald Trump’s legal team⁤ is⁢ gearing⁤ up for ⁤what could⁢ be‌ a six to seven-week ‌trial‍ in the ⁢classified documents⁢ case in Florida,⁤ according to attorney ⁤Todd Blanche. During a⁢ recent hearing, ⁣Blanche⁣ revealed that prosecutors⁣ estimated they would need ‍21 ⁤days⁣ to⁢ present⁣ their ⁢side ⁣of⁤ the case, and⁢ potential⁣ challenges with ‌jury ⁣selection could further extend the ⁤trial ⁣duration.

The ‌trial ⁣length is ⁤a crucial factor ⁤as Trump’s lawyers,⁤ who ⁢consider‍ him ‍the 2024‌ GOP‌ front-runner, aim to⁤ postpone ⁣the ‌proceedings‌ until‌ after⁤ the ‍presidential‍ election. They argue that a fair trial is ⁣not ⁣possible‍ before ‌the election takes place.

The 38-count indictment ⁢against Trump ⁣and ⁤aide‍ Walt Nauta is being led ⁤by special⁤ counsel Jack‌ Smith,⁤ who is targeting a⁤ December 11 start ⁤date for⁣ the‍ trial. The charges⁢ include willful⁢ retention of national‍ defense information, conspiracy to obstruct⁣ justice, and ⁣withholding⁤ a document or record.

Trump⁢ has consistently maintained his innocence, ⁢using⁤ his social ⁤media⁤ platform⁤ Truth Social to express⁤ his‍ views. He has denounced‍ the indictment⁤ as “the⁣ most‍ evil and heinous abuse of power ⁣in the history of our country” and referred to ⁤Smith ‍as a “thug” with ⁤a ⁣political agenda.

In the‌ ongoing ‍case, Smith has requested a ‍protective order to manage access to ‌the⁤ classified ⁤documents⁤ before⁢ providing discovery⁣ to ‍the defense team. However, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon denied Smith’s ⁢request⁤ due to a “lack ⁣of⁣ meaningful conferral.” Cannon ⁢emphasized ‍the⁤ need⁢ for⁢ further discussion between the special ‌counsel ⁣and⁤ Trump’s team ⁤before making a ruling ⁤on ‍the protective⁢ order.

While ⁢Cannon ⁢did‌ not‍ decide⁤ on the ‌trial ⁢timing during the⁤ hearing, she indicated⁢ that ‍it would‍ not ‌take‍ place⁣ before the ⁤requested ‍date‍ in ⁣December. ‍Trump’s ⁣legal team ⁣has chosen ⁤not ⁣to ‌comment on ‍the⁤ matter ⁤at this time.
