Former President Donald Trump’s Legal Team Prepares for Lengthy Trial in Classified Documents Case
Former President Donald Trump’s legal team is gearing up for what could be a six to seven-week trial in the classified documents case in Florida, according to attorney Todd Blanche. During a recent hearing, Blanche revealed that prosecutors estimated they would need 21 days to present their side of the case, and potential challenges with jury selection could further extend the trial duration.
The trial length is a crucial factor as Trump’s lawyers, who consider him the 2024 GOP front-runner, aim to postpone the proceedings until after the presidential election. They argue that a fair trial is not possible before the election takes place.
The 38-count indictment against Trump and aide Walt Nauta is being led by special counsel Jack Smith, who is targeting a December 11 start date for the trial. The charges include willful retention of national defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and withholding a document or record.
Trump has consistently maintained his innocence, using his social media platform Truth Social to express his views. He has denounced the indictment as “the most evil and heinous abuse of power in the history of our country” and referred to Smith as a “thug” with a political agenda.
In the ongoing case, Smith has requested a protective order to manage access to the classified documents before providing discovery to the defense team. However, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon denied Smith’s request due to a “lack of meaningful conferral.” Cannon emphasized the need for further discussion between the special counsel and Trump’s team before making a ruling on the protective order.
While Cannon did not decide on the trial timing during the hearing, she indicated that it would not take place before the requested date in December. Trump’s legal team has chosen not to comment on the matter at this time.
