Trump reverses stance on crime policy: ‘Your plan would result in her death’
Former President Donald Trump Backtracks on Death Penalty for Drug Dealers
In a recent interview with Fox News’s Bret Baier, former President Donald Trump discussed his controversial idea to institute the death penalty for all drug dealers. However, when confronted with the possibility of someone he had previously freed being executed, Trump seemed to backtrack on his stance.
During the interview, Trump emphasized that he believed the death penalty was the only way to combat the drug epidemic, citing China and Singapore as successful examples. He also defended his First Step Act, highlighting the case of former drug dealer Alice Johnson as a success story.
“I focused on nonviolent crime,” Trump explained. “Take Alice Johnson, for example. She was involved in selling marijuana, mostly marijuana, and she received a 50-year jail sentence.”
However, Baier interjected, pointing out that under Trump’s plan, Johnson would be executed as a drug dealer.
“No, no, no,” Trump responded, seemingly caught off guard. “It would depend on the severity.”
Baier continued to press the issue, revealing that Johnson had been involved in a multimillion-dollar cocaine ring. Trump then offered conflicting explanations, stating that Johnson would not have engaged in drug dealing if harsher penalties were in place beforehand, but also suggesting that the punishment would only apply after a certain date.
“She wouldn’t be killed. Start as of now. So you wouldn’t go to the past—” Trump tried to clarify.
Baier interrupted, laughing, and pointed out the inconsistency in Trump’s policy. The former president responded by asserting that Johnson wouldn’t have been involved in drug dealing if the death penalty had been in place.
“Yeah. But she wouldn’t have done it if it was the death penalty,” Trump argued. “In other words, if it were the death penalty, she wouldn’t have been on that phone call.”
Trump’s comments left many confused about his actual plan to execute all drug dealers, as his explanations seemed to contradict each other.
