2024 rivals stay silent as Donald Trump faces indictment.
Trump’s Latest Indictment Draws Mixed Responses from Rivals
Former President Donald Trump’s recent indictment has sparked a flurry of reactions from his 2024 presidential rivals. However, while some lower-tiered candidates have spoken out, many of Trump’s major rivals have remained surprisingly quiet.
Lower-Tiered Candidates Respond
Vivek Ramaswamy, former Texas Rep. Will Hurd, and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, all facing an uphill battle for the nomination, have been the primary rivals to respond to Trump’s legal woes.
“Here we go again: another disastrous Trump indictment. It’s downright pathetic that Fulton County publicly posted the indictment on its website even before the grand jury had finished convening,” Ramaswamy posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “As someone who’s running for President against Trump, I’d volunteer to write the amicus brief to the court myself: prosecutors should not be deciding U.S. presidential elections, and if they’re so overzealous that they commit constitutional violations, then the cases should be thrown out & they should be held accountable.”
Other long-shot candidates, including Hurd, have criticized Trump’s multiple indictments and urged the GOP to move beyond him. “This is further evidence that Trump knew he lost the 2020 election and was ready to do anything it took to cling to power. He will use this latest indictment as another opportunity to manipulate Americans into paying his legal bills,” Hurd said.
Top Rivals Remain Silent
Notably, Trump’s top rivals, such as Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, Sen. Tim Scott, and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, have not issued any statements regarding the indictment. This silence is a departure from their previous denunciations of the ”weaponization” of the justice system.
While Pence has been critical of Trump in recent times, he did not comment on the Georgia indictments. Haley’s campaign also refrained from addressing the indictment and instead focused on the anniversary of the fall of Kabul.
Christie Pushes Back Against Trump
Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a noted anti-Trump critic, spoke out against the former president’s attacks on the justice system. “Look running for president is his choice. No one else is making him do it. But it is not an excuse not for the justice system to continue to operate,” Christie said during an interview with Fox News.
DeSantis, Trump’s top rival, has not commented on the indictment.
The silence from Trump’s rivals may indicate some fatigue from his legal problems as they prepare for the upcoming primary debate. They are likely to face questions about Trump’s dominance in the race.
