DeSantis criticizes ‘politicization’ of Trump’s indictment.
Gov. Ron DeSantis Reacts to Trump’s Indictment: “Criminalization of Politics”
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) responded to former President Donald Trump’s latest indictment, labeling it as an example of the “criminalization of politics.”
Three Key Revelations from the Georgia Indictment of Donald Trump
Trump, along with 18 other defendants, was indicted on Monday evening for their involvement in attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. The charges were filed under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO).
In a similar vein to his previous reactions to Trump’s indictments, Gov. DeSantis echoed Sen. Tim Scott’s denunciation of the indictment, emphasizing his commitment to ending the weaponization of federal agencies like the DOJ and FBI if elected in 2024.
“We’ll have a new director. We will have new leadership in the DOJ. We’re going to make sure that there’s a single standard of justice in this country,” he asserted during a press call with New England reporters.
Gov. DeSantis highlighted that the RICO statute, under which Trump is being charged, was originally intended to combat organized crime rather than political activities.
According to Gov. DeSantis, Atlanta is allocating an excessive amount of resources to pursue the contestation of the 2020 election.
While acknowledging the allocation of resources in Trump’s case, he pointed out that “Atlanta has significant crime issues at present. The approach to crime has been far from rigorous, and there have been instances where criminals who should have been detained were released.”
Neither Gov. DeSantis nor Sen. Scott provided statements on the indictment when initially asked on Monday evening. However, they responded early on Tuesday. Former Vice President Mike Pence and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, both prominent candidates, have yet to address the new indictment.
However, Vivek Ramaswamy preemptively denounced the indictment on Monday afternoon, describing it as “politicized persecutions through prosecution” during a town hall event with NewsNation on Monday night.
