Donald Trump indicted: Ex-president demands DC ‘Federal TAKEOVER’ ahead of arraignment.
The Night Before His Arraignment: Trump Condemns Biden, Smith, and D.C.
The night before his arraignment on charges related to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election, former President Donald Trump made some bold statements. He took the opportunity to condemn President Joe Biden, special counsel Jack Smith, and the “anti-Trump” city of Washington, D.C.
Instead of accepting the arraignment in what he called “the latest Fake ‘case'” in Washington, D.C., Trump suggested a different venue. He proposed that it be held in the “politically unbiased nearby State of West Virginia!” Furthermore, he expressed his concerns about the problems he sees in the nation’s capital and called for a “Federal TAKEOVER.”
Donald Trump Indicted: Three Takeaways from Former President’s Third Indictment
“The latest Fake ‘case’ brought by Crooked Joe Biden & Deranged Jack Smith will hopefully be moved to an impartial Venue, such as the politically unbiased nearby State of West Virginia!” the former president wrote on Truth Social.
“IMPOSSIBLE to get a fair trial in Washington, D.C., which is over 95% anti-Trump, & for which I have called for a Federal TAKEOVER in order to bring our Capital back to Greatness. It is now a high crime embarrassment to our Nation and, indeed, the World. This Indictment is all about Election Interference!!!” Trump added.
The arraignment is scheduled for Thursday afternoon and will take place at a courthouse located between the White House and Capitol. The proximity to the Capitol prompted preemptive security measures, including the installation of fencing around the government building.
Many Republicans have criticized the case against Trump, labeling it as politically motivated. They have specifically highlighted the contrasting treatment of the former president by the Justice Department compared to Joe Biden amid the ongoing investigation into him and his son.
Trump is not alone in questioning the fairness of the arraignment in D.C. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) appeared on Fox News’s Hannity and expressed his concerns about the trial’s location.
“Lindsey Graham, you know the odds of him winning in Washington, D.C., are next to zero. Five percent of the population in D.C. voted for Trump. In New York City, 12%; in Fulton County, Georgia, 26%. Do you think he can get a fair trial in those venues? I do not believe he can,” host Sean Hannity asked the South Carolina Republican.
“Well, Sean, any conviction in D.C. against Donald Trump is not legitimate,” Graham flatly answered. “The judge in this case hates Trump. You can convict Trump of kidnapping Lindbergh’s baby in D.C.!”
“You need to have a change of venue. You need a new judge. And we need to win in 2024 to stop this crazy crap,” he added.
It’s worth noting that Trump is also under investigation in Fulton County, Georgia, for a possible fourth indictment related to his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. This comes after his first indictment in Manhattan in March for charges related to business records falsification and another in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida in June for charges related to his alleged mishandling of classified documents. He holds the distinction of being the first president, current or former, to be indicted.
