Donald Trump indicted; cancels news conference on election fraud due to overwhelming evidence.
Former President Donald Trump Cancels Highly Anticipated Press Briefing
Former President Donald Trump has made the decision to cancel Monday’s highly anticipated press briefing, which was expected to include the release of a report that he claimed would lead to his exoneration in the Georgia 2020 election case.
Trump took to social media to announce the cancellation, stating that the information he planned to present will now be included in formal legal filings instead.
Trump’s ‘Most Dangerous Case in Georgia’ Faces Delay
“Rather than releasing the report on the rigged & stolen Georgia 2020 presidential election on Monday, my lawyers would prefer putting this, I believe, irrefutable & overwhelming evidence of election fraud & irregularities in formal legal filings as we fight to dismiss this disgraceful Indictment by a publicity & campaign finance seeking D.A., who sadly presides over a record-breaking Murder & Violent Crime area, Atlanta,” Trump said in a post to Truth Social. “Therefore, the News Conference is no longer necessary!”
Trump also mentioned that the report should exonerate the 18 other individuals who were listed in Monday’s indictment and are facing their own charges. This includes his lawyers, Rudy Giuliani and John Eastman, as well as his former White House chief of staff, Mark Meadows. The press briefing was originally scheduled to take place on August 21 in Bedminster, New Jersey.
The 41-count indictment, accusing the defendants of unlawfully conspiring to conduct and participate in a “criminal enterprise” following Trump’s 2020 election loss in Georgia, was released just before midnight last Monday. Trump himself was indicted on 13 counts, including racketeering charges.
The latest indictment marks Trump’s fifth, but it is only the fourth criminal case. In a separate case, special counsel Jack Smith released a superseding indictment in his federal investigation into Trump’s handling of classified documents.
The cancellation of the press briefing coincides with Trump’s legal team’s request to delay his trial in Washington, D.C., until 2026. This request is to ensure that his team has sufficient time to review all the necessary evidence. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges thus far, but he has not yet entered a plea in Georgia.
