Donald Trump indicted, criticizes Georgia charges as ‘Witch Hunt persists’.
Former President Donald Trump Slams Indictment on Racketeering Charges
In a fiery response to the indictment against him on racketeering charges related to the 2020 presidential election in Fulton County, Georgia, former President Donald Trump did not hold back. In a Truth Social post early Tuesday morning, Trump labeled the charges as part of an ongoing “Witch Hunt” orchestrated by an “out of control and very corrupt District Attorney.”
“So, the Witch Hunt continues! 19 people Indicated tonight, including the former President of the United States, me, by an out of control and very corrupt District Attorney who campaigned and raised money on, ’I will get Trump.’ And what about those Indictment Documents put out today, long before the Grand Jury even voted, and then quickly withdrawn? Sounds Rigged to me! Why didn’t they Indict 2.5 years ago? Because they wanted to do it right in the middle of my political campaign. Witch Hunt!” Trump said.
This statement echoes the sentiments expressed by Trump’s presidential campaign and attorneys regarding the indictment in Georgia. The campaign denounced the charges as “election interference” even before the charging document was unsealed. Trump’s legal team described the events surrounding the indictment, including the premature release and subsequent removal of the charging document from the county clerk’s website, as “shocking and absurd.”
Indictment Details
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, in a late-night press conference, outlined the allegations against Trump and his co-conspirators. According to Willis, they were working towards the “illegal goal of allowing Donald J. Trump to seize the presidential term of office beginning on January 20th, 2021.”
Trump himself was indicted on 13 counts, alongside prominent figures such as attorneys Rudy Giuliani, John Eastman, and Sidney Powell, as well as former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows. The charging document also mentioned approximately 30 unnamed alleged co-conspirators, bringing the total number of individuals involved in the alleged racketeering scheme to 19.
This is not the first time Trump has faced legal troubles this year. He has been indicted in three other jurisdictions, including Manhattan, Florida, and Washington, D.C., on various charges related to business records falsification, mishandling of classified documents, and attempts to overturn the 2020 election.
2024 Presidential Primary and Potential Rematch
Despite the ongoing legal battles, Trump remains the front-runner in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, leading all other candidates by a significant margin of nearly 40%, according to the RealClearPolitics polling average. While most of his opponents in the Republican primary have yet to address the latest indictment, winning the GOP nomination would likely set the stage for a highly anticipated rematch against President Joe Biden, the current front-runner on the Democratic side.
