An Attorney’s Plea: Televise Trump’s Trial for the American People to See
An attorney representing Donald Trump in his case over alleged election subversion said Sunday that he “would love” to see the former president’s trial televised amid calls from House Democrats for cameras to be allowed inside a federal courtroom.
“I personally would love to see that,” Lauro told Shannon Bream on Fox News Sunday. “I’m convinced the Biden administration does not want the American people to see the truth. And they acted on it by filing this protective order, which is an effort to keep important information about this case from the press.”
Surprising Lack of Media Support
Lauro said he was surprised that media networks haven’t already “lined up and filed pleadings” to the Washington, D.C., federal court to allow cameras into the forthcoming proceedings. He alleged a “very broad attempt by the Biden administration to keep information away from the American people during the election season.”
“The American people have a right to know; of course, Joe Biden doesn’t want that to happen.”
Trump came to federal court last Thursday, where he pleaded guilty to four federal charges over his alleged efforts to subvert the outcome of the 2020 election. Special counsel later filed a motion to the judge presiding over the case, asking for a protective order for evidence, citing recent social media threats made by Trump on his Truth Social platform.
Lauro said the statements cited by the Justice Department were Trump’s response in a ”political” fashion.
“This is the problem with bringing a political prosecution in a political season,” Lauro said on Sunday. “President Trump was responding in a political way to some of his political opponents. And the Biden administration wants the judge to put in place an order that will prevent the press from obtaining exculpatory and material information that might be relevant to these proceedings.”
The Judicial Conference, which is chaired by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, could vote to amend the rules to allow cameras in the federal courtroom, though they’ve been reluctant to do so in the past. Congress could also pass a law.
On Aug. 4, at least three dozen House Democrats led by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) called for televising Trump’s federal trials, writing a letter to Judge Roslynn Mauskopf, who oversees the administration of federal courts.
“If the public is to fully accept the outcome, it will be vitally important for it to witness, as directly as possible, how the trials are conducted, the strength of the evidence adduced, and the credibility of witnesses,” the lawmakers said.
