Donald Trump indicted: Georgia grand jury charges ex-president with RICO for 2020 election.
A Grand Jury Indicts Donald Trump on Racketeering Charges
A grand jury in Georgia has delivered a significant blow to former President Donald Trump. On Monday, Trump was indicted on racketeering charges related to the 2020 election. This marks the fifth indictment against Trump this year, across four separate criminal cases. As the current frontrunner for the 2024 GOP nomination, these charges could have far-reaching implications for his political future.
The Charges and the Prosecutor
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is the prosecutor behind these charges. Court filings reveal that Trump, along with 18 others, is facing a number of RICO violations. Willis began investigating Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election in January 2021. After months of investigation, she convened a grand jury in May 2022.
The Grand Jury’s Findings
The grand jury’s final report, released earlier this year, shed light on the extensive nature of the investigation. The report stated that the grand jury heard from 75 witnesses, including election workers, technical experts, and individuals who claimed election fraud had occurred. Shockingly, the report also suggested that some witnesses may have committed perjury, recommending further indictments for those individuals.
Following the release of the report, grand jury forewoman Emily Kohrs made headlines with her media tour. While she did not name specific individuals, she hinted that charges would be brought against a long list of people. This caused controversy, prompting the judge overseeing the grand jury to clarify that jurors could discuss the final report but not the deliberations.
Controversies Surrounding the Case
The case took another twist when Reuters published a document listing numerous felonies against Trump. The document had allegedly been posted on Fulton County’s website but was quickly removed. Fulton County dismissed the document as “fictitious” and assured the media that legitimate filings would be promptly notified.
Trump’s attorneys seized on this development, claiming it demonstrated a lack of due process. They argued that the proposed indictment should have remained confidential within the District Attorney’s Office, rather than being leaked to the clerk’s office and assigned a case number and judge before the grand jury had even deliberated. According to Trump’s attorneys, this is just one example of the constitutional violations that have plagued the case from the beginning.
Multiple Indictments Against Trump
This indictment in Georgia is not the only legal battle Trump is facing. Special counsel Jack Smith has charged him in two federal cases, one in Florida and one in Washington, D.C. The Florida case alleges that Trump illegally held classified documents after leaving office, while the D.C. case accuses him of conspiring to overturn the 2020 election. Smith later filed a superseding indictment in Florida, adding more felonies related to classified documents. Additionally, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has brought charges against Trump in New York, relating to a hush money scheme involving porn star Stormy Daniels in 2016.
With multiple indictments and legal battles on the horizon, the future looks uncertain for Donald Trump. These charges could have significant implications for his political aspirations and personal reputation.
