Special Counsel Charges Former President Donald Trump in Federal Court
Special counsel Jack Smith locked eyes with former President Donald Trump during his arraignment in a federal courtroom in Washington on Thursday. Smith has brought charges against Trump in relation to his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election, following a favorable vote by a grand jury in the nation’s capital.

This is the second time Smith and Trump have found themselves in the same courtroom. The first instance occurred in a federal courthouse in Miami, Florida, where Trump faced charges related to the mishandling of classified documents. Smith is also the lead prosecutor in that case.
Trump pleaded not guilty to the four charges brought against him in the federal court in Washington. These charges include conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.
The next hearing in the 2020 election case is scheduled for August 28th before Judge Tanya Chutkan, following the arraignment presided over by Magistrate Judge Moxila A. Upadhyaya.

Trump’s arraignment in Washington on Thursday marks his third appearance in court this year after being indicted. The former president’s first arraignment took place in Manhattan in April, where he faced charges related to the falsification of business records for alleged hush money payments. The second arraignment occurred in Miami in June, following his indictment on charges related to the mishandling of classified documents.
It is widely anticipated that Trump will face additional charges in Fulton County, Georgia, in the coming weeks for his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election. Trump lost both the 2020 election and the state of Georgia to now-President Joe Biden.
