Donald Trump indicted: Poll shows DeSantis losing significant 2024 support since charges

A new Yahoo-YouGov poll conducted from Thursday to Friday and released on Saturday shows that since Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg indicted former President Donald Trump, his lead over Florida Governor Ron DeSantis among Republican voters for the 2024 presidential primary elections has tripled. Trump’s continuous support reached 57%, while DeSantis trailed with 31%, bringing the difference to a whopping 26 points. This percentage is more than three times the 8% lead Trump held over DeSantis two weeks ago in the same poll, where the former president was winning against the Florida Governor 47% to 39%. The poll also revealed that DeSantis has dropped from 28% to 21%.

The poll’s results showed that when the two Republican candidates were pitted against a wider field of ten candidates, Trump maintains a steady lead while DeSantis’s numbers plunged. The former president holds 52% support in the larger primary field, up from 44% in the last poll.

No other declared or potential GOP candidates polled in the double digits. Former Vice President Mike Pence had 3% support, while former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley had 5%.

Of the Republicans surveyed, 54% preferred Trump as their nominee in 2024, with only about a third in favor of another candidate. This number marks a three-point jump from the previous poll, but the results were more split when including respondents who weren’t aligned with Republicans.

The surge of support indicates that the indictment could boost Trump’s candidacy in the 2024 elections, particularly among Republicans. This comes after Texas Senator Ted Cruz called the indictment an “enormous political gift” for Trump.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg indicted Trump on charges related to hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels made in 2016. The indictment represents the first time that a former U.S. president is facing a criminal charge. Michael Cohen, Trump’s former lawyer, testified before Congress in 2019 that he paid Daniels $130,000 during the campaign to prevent her from going public about an affair she claimed to have had with Trump in 2005. Cohen pleaded guilty and served time for the alleged payment, claiming that Trump reimbursed him gradually. Trump has denied any wrongdoing and pledged to fight the charges.
