Key takeaways from Jack Smith’s superseding indictment on Donald Trump’s indictment.
Former President Donald Trump Faces New Charges in Superseding Indictment
Former President Donald Trump has been hit with three additional charges in a superseding indictment, alleging mishandling of classified documents. This brings the total number of charges against Trump to 40. The indictment also includes charges against Mar-a-Lago worker Carlos De Oliveira. Let’s delve into the new details revealed through these allegations.
New Charges Won’t Affect Trump’s Timeline
Special counsel Jack Smith, in a filing to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, emphasized that the superseding indictment should not disrupt the established schedule for the case. Smith stated, “The superseding indictment should not disturb the Court’s scheduling order… and the Special Counsel’s Office is taking steps to ensure that it does not do so.” However, Judge Aileen Cannon acknowledged that the current schedule may need adjustments due to the extensive discovery involved in the case.
Four New Counts Unveil Damning Text and Signal Messages
The indictment presents compelling evidence, including text messages and Signal messages exchanged between indicted Trump aide Walt Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira. These messages allegedly reveal coordination between the two individuals to delete security camera footage at the Mar-a-Lago Club. Nauta’s secret trip to Florida in June 2022, disguised as a “family emergency,” was allegedly intended to delete the footage before it could be subpoenaed. The texts also show regular communication between Nauta and De Oliveira, including meetings and covert activities near the IT office where the security footage was managed.
Jack Smith Continues to Investigate Mar-a-Lago Employees
The indictment mentions several anonymous Mar-a-Lago employees, with one identified as “Trump employee 4” engaging in a conversation with De Oliveira. In this conversation, De Oliveira allegedly revealed that “the boss” wanted the security camera footage deleted. Other interactions between Trump employee 4 and De Oliveira, along with other employees, have led to De Oliveira’s indictment. This suggests that Smith’s investigation is far from over and may involve further interviews with Trump resort employees.
The new charges against Trump come amidst widespread expectations of a grand jury indictment in Washington, D.C., related to his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election and the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. Trump is also under investigation by a grand jury in Georgia for his post-election actions.
In response to the new charges, Trump’s campaign issued a statement on Thursday, calling them a “continued desperate and flailing attempt by the Biden Crime Family and their Department of Justice to harass President Trump and those around him.”
