Donald Trump indicted for undisclosed evidence destruction scheme not mentioned in court by Jack Smith.
Former President Donald Trump Faces New Charges in Indictment
Former President Donald Trump is facing additional charges in his indictment, adding to the already extensive list of allegations against him. The new charges revolve around his alleged mishandling of classified documents and attempts to destroy security camera footage from Mar-a-Lago.
Alleged Scheme to Destroy Evidence
The Justice Department has accused Trump of orchestrating a scheme to destroy evidence that was requested by them. This has resulted in three new charges being brought against him, bringing the total to 40. Additionally, Carlos De Oliveira, a property manager at Mar-a-Lago, has also been indicted in connection with these charges.
In a superseding indictment filed on Thursday, one specific attempt to destroy evidence was not mentioned. However, CNN reported that in October 2022, an employee at Mar-a-Lago drained the resort’s swimming pool, causing the room where the security camera footage servers were located to flood. It remains unclear whether the flooding was intentional or accidental, but prosecutors have been questioning witnesses about the incident.
While the pool incident is not explicitly referenced in the indictment, the CNN report suggests that prosecutors are actively investigating the alleged flooding. The report also states that the equipment in the room was not damaged during the flood.
De Oliveira’s Alleged Involvement
According to the indictment, De Oliveira allegedly informed an employee that “the boss” wanted the security footage to be destroyed. As a result, De Oliveira has been charged with conspiracy to obstruct justice, altering, destroying, mutilating, or concealing an object, corruptly altering, destroying, mutilating, or concealing a document, record, or other object, as well as making false statements and representations.
These new charges against Trump come at a time when he is widely expected to face indictment by a grand jury in Washington, D.C., for his alleged attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and his involvement in the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. Additionally, Trump is also under investigation by a grand jury in Georgia for his actions following the 2020 election.
