Pence stands by Constitution amidst Trump indictment on Jan. 6.
Former Vice President Mike Pence Reacts to Trump’s Indictment
Former Vice President Mike Pence didn’t hold back in his response to the news of former President Donald Trump’s third indictment. As Trump’s onetime boss and current 2024 rival, Pence made it clear that he believes anyone who prioritizes themselves over the Constitution should never hold the highest office in the United States.
“Today’s indictment serves as an important reminder: anyone who puts himself over the Constitution should never be President of the United States,” Pence said in a statement Tuesday evening. “I will have more to say about the government’s case after reviewing the indictment. The former president is entitled to the presumption of innocence but with this indictment, his candidacy means more talk about January 6th and more distractions.”
Pence Highlights Bidenomics and Economic Plans
Pence also emphasized that Trump’s legal troubles are diverting attention away from important issues, such as President Joe Biden’s economic policies and alleged corruption involving Hunter Biden. Pence recently unveiled his own economic plan to combat inflation, while Trump’s chief rival, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), presented his own 10-point economic plan. Unfortunately, with Trump’s indictment dominating the news cycle, these plans are likely to be overshadowed.
Pence Urges Focus on Restoring Civility
Despite Trump’s indictment, Pence urged the nation not to get caught up in the media circus surrounding the former president. Instead, he called for a renewed focus on restoring civility in public life, emphasizing that the country and the Constitution are more important than any individual’s career.
“Our country is more important than one man. Our constitution is more important than any one man’s career,” he said.
Pence himself is mentioned in the 45-page indictment, with the document noting that he informed Trump that he had seen no evidence of fraud that could change the election outcome. Pence pointed to his resistance against Trump’s pressure to not certify the electoral results, reaffirming his commitment to upholding the Constitution.
“On January 6th, Former President Trump demanded that I choose between him and the Constitution. I chose the Constitution and I always will,” Pence said. “As your president, I will not yield an inch in defending America, our people, or our values, and I promise you: I will do so in a way consistent with my oath to the Constitution and the character and decency of the American people.”
