Donald Trump trial: Defense presses E. Jean Carroll on why she didn’t scream
Trump’s Accuser Testifies in Defamation Lawsuit
Former President Donald Trump’s lawyer grilled E. Jean Carroll on her inability to recall the exact date of the alleged rape, which she claims occurred nearly three decades ago. Carroll, a former Elle magazine writer, testified for a second day in her civil defamation lawsuit against Trump. She alleges that he sexually assaulted her in a dressing room at Bergdorf Goodman in 1995 or 1996. Trump has vehemently denied the allegations.
Questions Raised About Alleged Scheme
During the trial, Trump’s attorney questioned Carroll about a 2017 email exchange with her friend Carroll Martin, in which they discussed Trump and a “scheme.” Carroll couldn’t recall what the email meant and denied that the word “scheme” carried any “evil” connotation.
Why Carroll Didn’t Scream for Help
Tacopina pressed Carroll on why she didn’t scream for help during the alleged rape. Carroll defended herself, saying, “I’m not a screamer,” and added that women often keep silent about attacks because they fear being blamed for not doing enough to stop them.
Other Accusers and Evidence to Be Presented
The trial is civil, not criminal, and Carroll is seeking unspecified damages. Two other women who have accused Trump of sexual misconduct are expected to testify, along with a deposition from the former president and the infamous Access Hollywood tape in which Trump boasts about grabbing women by the vagina. A nine-member jury will decide whether Trump should be held liable for Carroll’s claims.
