Former President Donald Trump’s day in court for his classified documents case has been scheduled, with several important dates set to occur in the middle of the 2024 presidential campaign season.
Key Dates in the Trial:
- Aug. 9, 2023: Deadline for Trump’s attorneys to oppose the government’s motion for a protective order over the classified documents.
- Nov. 3, 2023: Deadline for filing all pretrial motions for either party.
- Dec. 11, 2023: Hearing on pretrial motions brought by either party.
- March 20, 2024: Deadline for either party to file any motions in limine.
- March 25, 2024: The trial in Trump’s criminal trial is scheduled to begin in New York.
- April 17, 2024: Hearing held on motions in limine.
- May 14, 2024: Hearing held on any remaining concerns regarding the Classified Information Procedures Act.
- May 20, 2024: Trial in the classified documents case begins.
Judge Aileen Cannon has set the schedule for the trial in the case brought by special counsel Jack Smith in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. While the schedule is subject to change, here are the current key dates in the trial, along with key dates for the 2024 election.
Aug. 23, 2023: The first Republican presidential debate is scheduled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It is currently unknown if Trump will participate, but he has qualified for the debate.
Jan. 15, 2024: Iowa caucuses are held. The first contest in the Republican presidential primary.
July 15-18, 2024: Republican National Convention is held. The Republican nominee for president for 2024 will be nominated during the convention, which will be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Cannon, in the filing, conceded that the current schedule may not hold up due to the “amount of discovery in this case.”
“By conservative estimates, the amount of discovery, in this case, is voluminous and likely to increase in the normal course as trial approaches,” Cannon wrote. “And, while the Government has taken steps to organize and filter the extensive discovery, no one disagrees that Defendants need adequate time to review and evaluate it on their own accord.”
Trump was charged with 31 counts of willful retention of national defense information, one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice, one count of withholding a document or record, one count of corruptly concealing a document or record, one count of concealing a document in a federal investigation, one count for a scheme to conceal, and one count related to alleged false statements.
He appeared in federal court for his arraignment in Miami, Florida, last month, where he pleaded not guilty. The former president claimed earlier this week he had received a target letter for Smith’s investigation into the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021, likely setting up an indictment for Trump in that investigation.
