Don’t Call It a Christmas Tree: City to Raise ‘Multi-Faith Tree’ for Diversity, Inclusivity Plan
City of Bradford to Raise ’Multi-Faith Tree’ for Diversity and Inclusivity
The city of Bradford, England, is set to celebrate its multiculturalism this holiday season by raising a “multi-faith tree” in its town square. The tree, organized by the Black Asian Minority Ethnic Business Committee, aims to bring communities together and celebrate the city’s diverse tapestry.
The tree, which will be displayed near city hall, will be accompanied by a traditional Christmas tree. The committee has not yet announced when the trees will be placed.
Local businesses have the opportunity to sponsor ornaments for the multi-faith tree, symbolizing their commitment to inclusivity and harmony in the community.
The idea for the tree came from Saleem Kader, a member of the BAME committee, who wanted to highlight the power of multiculturalism in the city.
While the initiative has received positive feedback, conservative commentator Darren Grimes raised concerns about whether other faiths in Bradford would be required to observe multi-faith symbols.
Bradford’s Changing Religious Landscape
According to the 2021 census data, the majority of Bradford residents identify as Christian, although the percentage has decreased since 2011. The Muslim population has seen an increase, while the number of residents reporting no religion has also risen.
The BAME committee has plans for more initiatives in 2024 and during the “City of Culture” celebrations in 2025.
Why? Will you be forcing other faiths in Bradford to observe multi faith symbols in the name of diversity and inclusion, or does this only apply to important events within the Christian calendar? https://t.co/E8vLbZLdJH
