Teacher used code name ‘Bubbles’ to hide LGBT club from parents, emails reveal
A Teacher in Illinois Kept Parents in the Dark About Students Joining an LGBT Club
A high school teacher in southern Illinois deliberately withheld information from parents regarding their children’s participation in a Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) Club, according to emails obtained by Parents Defending Education and shared with The Daily Wire.
The teacher at Red Bud High School went to great lengths to conceal the existence of the GSA Club, referring to it as ”Bubbles” and excluding parents from Google meetings about the club.
This incident highlights the alarming trend of educators across the country hiding information about sexuality and gender from parents.
Superintendent Jonathan Tallman of Red Bud Community Unit School District 132 acknowledged that the teacher’s actions violated district policy. He emphasized that the district would never support keeping parents uninformed about school clubs or activities.
In an email exchange with a teacher from Waterloo High School, the Red Bud teacher discussed platforms for club communication and addressed concerns about parents having access to information. The GSA networks, backed by Left-leaning groups and nonprofits like the Transgender Law Center and the Ford Foundation, were at the center of the discussion.
The former Red Bud teacher revealed the tactics used to exclude parents, stating, “We use Google Classroom. I don’t invite parents though. In the beginning, we named it something that did not identify the group, but the kids knew what it was. ‘Bubbles’ was what they came up with. Kind of random, but they all knew.”
Tallman confirmed that the teacher who sent the email left the district, and the GSA club is no longer active. He assured that the district does not support withholding information from parents.
In another email, a sixth-grade teacher from Dorris Intermediate School in the Collinsville Community Unity School District 10 shared their communication methods with parents. However, the superintendent clarified that Dorris Intermediate has never had a GSA club and that parents are always informed about their children’s club participation.

How can educators find a balance between respecting students’ privacy and involving parents in sensitive issues such as sexuality and gender?
School policies and said that appropriate action would be taken. However, this incident raises important questions about the role of teachers in addressing sensitive issues such as sexuality and gender.
The role of parents in the education of their children is crucial. They have the right to be informed and involved in their children’s education and to make decisions that align with their values and beliefs. By intentionally withholding information about their children’s participation in the GSA Club, the teacher denied parents the opportunity to exercise these rights.
It is important to note that the GSA Club is a valuable resource for students who identify as LGBTQ+ or are allies. It provides a safe and supportive space for them to discuss issues related to their sexual orientation or gender identity. However, it is equally important to recognize that parents should be involved in their children’s lives and have the right to be aware of and support their children’s choices.
By excluding parents from Google meetings and referring to the GSA Club as “Bubbles,” the teacher not only violated school policies but also undermined trust between parents and the school. Trust is an essential element in the relationship between educators and parents, and incidents like this erode that trust.
This incident also sheds light on a larger issue of educators across the country hiding information about sexuality and gender from parents. While it is important to respect students’ privacy and confidentiality, it is equally important to find a balance between protecting students and involving parents in their education.
Open and honest communication between parents and educators is crucial in creating a positive and inclusive educational environment. It allows for a collaborative approach where all stakeholders can work together to support students in their personal and academic growth.
It is crucial for school districts and educators to establish clear guidelines and protocols when it comes to sensitive topics such as sexuality and gender. These guidelines should ensure that parents are informed and involved while also respecting the privacy and confidentiality of students.
In conclusion, the incident at Red Bud High School in Illinois highlights the need for open and honest communication between educators and parents. While the GSA Club provides support for LGBTQ+ students and allies, it is important to involve parents in their children’s education. Educators should find a balance between protecting students’ privacy and involving parents. Clear guidelines and protocols must be established to ensure that all stakeholders are informed and engaged in the education process.
