Get ready for a nationwide strike by Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash drivers this Valentine’s Day!
Rideshare Drivers United, an independent union, has announced that drivers from Lyft and Uber will be turning off their apps on Wednesday to protest the “significant decrease in pay we’ve all felt this winter.”
The Justice for App Workers coalition, a national coalition of ride-sharing and delivery drivers, has also joined the strike, demanding higher wages and safety measures.
The coalition emphasizes that drivers should not have to worry about making ends meet or being deactivated from the app. They urge other drivers to join the rallies and demand changes from Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, and other app companies profiting off their hard work.
“We’re tired of working 80 hours a week just to survive, constantly fearing for our safety and the possibility of being deactivated with a single click,” stated the Justice For App Workers coalition.
The coalition has announced that they will not be providing rides to and from airports all day in Rhode Island and the cities of Austin, Chicago, Hartford, Miami, Newark, Orlando, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Tampa.
Meanwhile, Uber has updated its policies to protect drivers from false allegations and those falsely accused under the influence of drugs or alcohol. They now require a drug test for drivers to resume driving after such accusations.
Lyft has also made changes to its driver program, guaranteeing at least 70 percent of riders’ fares to the driver after external fees. Drivers can also appeal if their account is deactivated by the company.
“We are constantly working to improve the driver experience. This month, we have introduced new offers and commitments to increase driver pay and transparency,” said Lyft in a statement.
“This includes a new minimum earnings guarantee and an improved deactivation appeals process. Drivers will always receive at least 70 percent of the weekly rider fares after external fees. It’s all part of our new customer-obsessed focus on drivers,” the statement continued.

How is the Justice for App Workers coalition supporting the strike and what are their goals in terms of better supporting drivers?
Title: Nationwide Strike Planned by Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash Drivers on Valentine’s Day
Introduction:
On Valentine’s Day, a nationwide strike by Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash drivers is set to take place as a protest against the significant decrease in pay experienced during the winter months. Rideshare Drivers United, an independent union, has announced the strike, and the Justice for App Workers coalition has joined the cause, demanding higher wages and improved safety measures.
Background:
The Justice for App Workers coalition, a national coalition representing ride-sharing and delivery drivers, has joined forces with Rideshare Drivers United to voice their concerns. Both organizations feel that drivers should not have to worry about making ends meet or fear being deactivated from the app. They believe that companies like Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash should listen to their grievances and implement necessary changes to better support their drivers.
The Strike:
On February 14, drivers from Lyft and Uber, along with delivery drivers from DoorDash, will turn off their apps in protest against the decreasing wages. This strike aims to highlight the value of the drivers’ hard work and demand fair compensation for their services. The objective is to draw attention from the app companies and encourage them to address the drivers’ concerns promptly.
Support and Actions:
The Justice for App Workers coalition has called on all drivers to show solidarity and join the rallies organized in 10 cities across the country. The locations include Rhode Island, Austin, Chicago, Hartford, Miami, Newark, Orlando, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Tampa. The coalition believes that by standing together, drivers can make their voices heard and increase the chances of creating meaningful change within the industry.
Company Responses:
Recognizing the need to address driver concerns, Uber has announced updated policies aimed at protecting drivers from false accusations. Drivers falsely accused under the influence of drugs or alcohol will now need to undergo a drug test before resuming their duties. This move addresses the prevailing issue of drivers being unjustly suspended based on unverified allegations.
Lyft has also made adjustments to its driver program by guaranteeing that drivers receive at least 70 percent of riders’ fares after external fees. Additionally, drivers now have the option to appeal account deactivations, ensuring a fair and transparent process.
Conclusion:
The nationwide strike by Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash drivers on Valentine’s Day showcases their determination to secure better working conditions, higher wages, and improved safety measures. As drivers turn off their apps and gather in various cities to protest, they hope that their united efforts will push app companies to reconsider their treatment of drivers and make the necessary changes to ensure their wellbeing and financial stability.
