Many Democrats join Republicans in passing bill to deport DUI-receiving illegal immigrants

The House⁣ Approves Bill to Deport Undocumented Immigrants Charged ⁢with DUI

The House of Representatives has approved a bill proposed by Republicans that aims to ⁢indefinitely deport undocumented immigrants who are charged with driving under the influence ‌in the United States. The legislation received support from 59 Democrats, making it a bipartisan effort.

“In the United States, someone dies⁢ in⁤ a crash with an impaired driver every 45 minutes. I lost two of my young newlywed constituents to ‌an illegal ‍immigrant driving under the influence of alcohol,” ⁤said Rep. Barry Moore (R-AL), who introduced the bill.

The final vote count was 274-150, with all Alabama House Republicans voting in favor of the ⁢bill and the state’s lone Democratic‌ representative, Terri Sewell, opposing‍ it.

This ⁢proposal comes‌ in response to⁢ a⁤ recent drunk⁢ driving incident involving ⁣an undocumented immigrant ⁢from El Salvador, who had been deported four times before. The immigrant allegedly caused a fatal car crash while under ⁢the influence of‍ alcohol, resulting in ‌the deaths of a mother and her⁢ son.

Immigration and Border Security Remain Contentious Issues

Immigration⁣ and⁢ border security have ‌become major points of contention among ‍lawmakers.⁣ Republicans⁣ are pushing for stricter immigration restrictions, with House‌ Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) accusing President‍ Joe Biden of intentionally allowing an open‌ border. Johnson called on Biden to issue ⁣an ‍executive order to address⁤ the country’s migration crisis.

“They made it a campaign issue when Biden came in on day one. … Biden has every tool in the toolbox to shut the⁤ southern border down … we don’t need more ‍money, we need to apply the laws that are on the books,” stated Moore.

Democrats, on the other hand, ⁤are blaming Republicans for perpetuating ‍the immigration problem by refusing to approve funds that they believe ‍would help solve the issue. ⁣White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre accused the GOP of hindering ‍Biden’s ⁤efforts to allocate resources to the border.

“They don’t‌ want to ‌solve the problem; they‌ want to keep the problem going as a campaign issue,” said Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) in reference to the bill. “So don’t come up here and‌ talk about the problems on the southern border if you‌ won’t give ⁣the president any means‌ to deal with it.”

The bill will now move to the Senate, although there ⁤are currently no immediate plans to address it.

Why do supporters of the bill argue that deportation is necessary for undocumented immigrants charged with DUI offenses?

Ho introduced the bill. “It is crucial that we take action to protect the American people and ensure that those who are here ⁢illegally and pose a threat to public safety are held accountable for their actions.”

The bill, officially known⁤ as the ‍”Deporting ⁣DUI Offenders⁢ Act,” would require the Department of Homeland Security to detain and deport any undocumented immigrant⁣ who is charged with a DUI offense. Under current law, ‌individuals convicted of a DUI can face imprisonment, fines, and the suspension⁢ of their driver’s license, but deportation is not mandatory.

Supporters of the bill argue that by enforcing deportation on DUI offenders, it will serve as a deterrent to undocumented immigrants who may be considering driving under the influence. They believe that stricter consequences will discourage these individuals from endangering the lives of others and help reduce the number‍ of alcohol-related accidents on the roads.

Opponents of the bill, however, argue that it unfairly targets⁢ undocumented immigrants and could lead to racial profiling. They assert that⁤ driving under the influence is a serious offense, but it should not be grounds ‌for immediate deportation. Instead,⁢ they propose implementing stricter penalties, such as extended⁢ jail time or mandatory rehabilitation‌ programs, to address the issue.

The bill’s bipartisan support highlights the concern over the safety of American citizens. Both⁣ Democrats ‌and Republicans agree that⁤ action needs to be taken to address the issue of DUI offenses committed by undocumented immigrants. However, there are differing opinions on⁣ the most appropriate approach to tackle ‌this problem.

While the bill has been ‍approved by ⁢the House, it still needs to be passed by the Senate and signed into law by the President in order to take effect. ⁤The Senate’s stance on the issue remains uncertain, as does the President’s position. The bill will⁤ likely face opposition and debate before any final decisions are made.

Deporting undocumented immigrants charged with DUI offenses is a highly contentious topic that brings into focus the larger immigration debate in ‌the country. It raises‍ questions about how undocumented immigrants are treated under the law, as well as concerns about public safety and the well-being of all residents in⁤ the United States.

Ultimately, the ⁢bill to deport undocumented immigrants charged with DUI offenses is an attempt to address a pressing issue. It aims to prevent accidents caused by impaired driving ‌and protect the lives of⁣ American citizens. ‌However, the ⁤bill’s effectiveness, fairness, and potential implications remain the subject of ongoing discussion and debate.
