Dr. Jay Bhattacharya criticizes Biden Admin’s push for universal COVID vaccine as ‘irresponsible’.
President Biden’s COVID Vaccine Comments Criticized as “Irresponsible”
President Joe Biden’s recent comments about the need for a new COVID vaccine have drawn criticism from Stanford University Professor of Medicine Dr. Jay Bhattacharya. Speaking in South Lake Tahoe, California, on Aug. 25, Mr. Biden stated that additional funding for a new vaccine is necessary and that it is likely to be recommended for all Americans, regardless of whether they have been previously vaccinated.
“It’s irresponsible to make this kind of public health advice for the entire American public in the absence of excellent randomized trial evidence, which has not been produced by the pharmaceutical companies,” Dr. Bhattacharya told The Epoch Times.
Dr. Bhattacharya expressed concern that the recommendation for a new vaccine is being made without sufficient scientific evidence. He emphasized the importance of randomized trial evidence, which has not been provided by the pharmaceutical companies developing the vaccines targeting the new COVID variants.
Furthermore, Dr. Bhattacharya criticized the comparison between COVID booster shots and flu vaccines. He explained that while flu vaccines have a long track record and their safety is well understood, the same cannot be said for the new COVID vaccine.
“Not requiring randomized trial evidence for updating the vaccine is irresponsible. It’s using a different mechanism than the flu vaccine. You can’t extend the experience you have with the flu vaccine to this vaccine,” he said.
Dr. Bhattacharya also highlighted President Biden’s statement that everyone will likely be advised to take the new vaccine, regardless of their previous vaccination status.
“Here where they’re saying is, essentially like it’s amnesty—We’re all going to be treated as if we’re unvaccinated with regard to this vaccine,” Dr. Bhattacharya said.
The criticism comes as COVID-19 hospitalizations have been increasing in the United States due to the spread of new variants. Multiple drug companies have introduced new vaccines targeting these variants, but Dr. Bhattacharya argues that the lack of randomized trial evidence raises concerns about their effectiveness and safety.
It is important to note that the new COVID vaccines are still pending approval from the FDA. The CDC and FDA officials have indicated their intention to recommend the updated COVID-19 shot, along with the flu shot and the recently approved RSV vaccine, to the American public.
