Police arrest man driving in grassy area near Capitol

The U.S. Capitol Police arrested a man Thursday for driving in a grassy area near the Capitol.

This comes as the first test since the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department embraced a “heightened security posture” city-wide in light of the terrorist attacks in Las Vegas, Nevada and New Orleans, Louisiana the day before. According to the department, there is no active threat in the nation’s capital.

Just before 10 a.m., the vehicle was seen traveling from Third Street NW and Constitution Avenue to park on the grass. Officers closed down five nearby streets, searched the vehicle, arrested the driver, and cleared the roadways again. The suspect, whose name has not been made public, is facing reckless driving charges.

“Our bomb squad cleared the car and declared that it is safe,” Capitol Police wrote on X.

This incident happened a day after a terrorist attack in New Orleans, where federal authorities said Shamsud-Din Jabbar subverted a police barricade during the New Year’s Day celebration, drove through the crowds, and then shot several more, killing fifteen people. Police killed the suspect by returning gunfire.

In another case, a man parked a Tesla Cybertruck outside of the glass doors to the Las Vegas Trump Hotel at about 8:40 a.m. local time Wednesday. Fifteen seconds later, the driver detonated the vehicle, killing himself from inside and injuring seven people.
