Bus Driver Arrested for Allegedly Transporting Pittsburgh Pirates While Under the Influence
A shocking incident unfolded when a bus driver was apprehended for allegedly driving the Pittsburgh Pirates while under the influence. The events took place as the team was departing Chicago, where they had just concluded a series, and heading towards Milwaukee.
“During the escort, the bus driver, 61-year-old Ronald E. Funderburke from Shelby, NC, was not following the escort and was traveling away from the escorting officers,” a spokesperson with the Illinois State Police told CWB Chicago.
Officers escorting the bus noticed peculiar behavior from the vehicle, prompting them to take action. The situation escalated when troopers observed erratic driving and eventually pulled the bus over on the right shoulder of Interstate 94 northbound at Dempster Street.
“After observing multiple signs of impairment, troopers arrested Funderburke for driving under the influence of alcohol and transported him to Chicago Police Department 16th District,” the spokesperson concluded.
The Pittsburgh Pirates organization expressed deep concern over the incident. Brian Warecki, senior vice president of communications for the team, emphasized the importance of the safety of their personnel.
“The important thing is that all of our personnel arrived in Milwaukee safely,” Warecki said. “Buses are contracted out to a local provider, which was consistent with this trip, and we are now in communication with the appropriate parties regarding this matter.”
Despite the unsettling events, the Pirates managed to reach their destination in Milwaukee. However, their luck did not continue as they were swept by the Brewers in a three-game series.
